When people think of Bamboo, they most often think that it is the stuff that panda bears eat. However, there are many uses of bamboo that stem beyond the Asian culture. Asia still holds one of the most heavily forested areas of the world. Within this region, there are also many dense bamboo forests. Bamboo is one of the most important raw materials used by early Asian people. Bamboo is a large group of giant grasses with over 1,200 species ranging from the tropics to more temperate regions. One of the many uses of bamboo is for landscaping purposes. Known as “the plant of a thousand uses,” people in the United States as well as other western cultures, use bamboo primarily for landscaping purposes. People will use bamboo in gardens and as ground cover. Bamboo is used for low hedges, boundaries, fillers, foundation plantings and even as house plants. In Asian cultures, bamboo is actually used in construction as well as to make handcrafted items. It can be used for flooring, sheets and paneling. Bamboo shoots are a part of Asian cuisine and have been somewhat adopted by American culture, making it available in the vegetable market. Other uses for bamboo include paper. Although bamboo may not look like grass, it is a group of perennial evergreen plants in the Poaceae grass family. This group contains some members that are gigantic and the largest members of the grass family with growth of approximately one meter a day from some of the largest species. There are around 1,000 species and 91 genera. The plants grow in many countries across the globe from northern Australia to East Asia, from India to the USA, Europe and Africa… in hot tropical climates and cool temperate ones… and even Antarctica. Running Bamboo The rhizomes of running bamboos extend underground at a relatively shallow depth and through these rhizomes the plants spread to densely fill an area of land. The rhizomes can grow quite some distance underground from the standing culms before the tip of the shoot breaks the grounds surface. Different species will be aggressive in this growth so if you are looking for a species that will rapidly produce a privacy screen it is important to do some research on a variety of types of running bamboo before you buy. Whatever the species of running bamboo, if you are looking for a hedge, windbreak, or screen, running bamboo is the type you need. There are a variety of techniques to ensuring that the growth spreads in the direction you want rather than just letting it randomly spread all over the place. If you want a hedge it is possible to divert the rhizomes so they run along in the direction you want the hedge or windbreak. Also, each segment of the rhizome will only shoot once. If you want that segment to survive do not damage it or growth will be stopped. If you have a rhizome growing in the wrong direction just snap off it’s tip and that will stop it. Clumping Bamboo Just as the name implies, clumping bamboo types do not sprout out rhizomes that grow for some distance from the main culm and they do not spread so far as the running bamboo types. Clumping bamboos are not considered invasive as they grow slowly and remain in a tight clump. The clumping species rhizome system grows similar to the shape of an inverted umbrella and produces new shoots annually. As the plant matures its circumference will grow slightly larger every year but maintains very slow spread. However, when choosing here to plant your clumping bamboo, do note that it will grow and therefore it is not a good idea to plant it too close to a wall or other structure to allow it the room that it will need as the plant matures. These plants may also eventually break a pot when contained if the root system has grown too large and the plant hasn’t been re-potted when needed.
